Open and close a ring

Ouvrir et fermer un anneau
Our video and photo tutorial:

Grab your pliers, beads, and findings... you're about to learn how to open and close a jump ring with pliers.

Opening and closing an open jump ring

For this, you will need:
  • a jump ring (round or oval)
  • your two following pliers: flat-nose pliers without teeth and fine flat-nose pliers without teeth.
If you are right-handed, the fine flat-nose pliers should be used with your right hand and the flat-nose pliers with your left hand. For left-handers, it will be the opposite.

Holding the pliers

Take your flat-nose pliers without teeth with your left hand. These pliers allow you to hold the jump ring during movements.

Opening the jump ring with two pliers

Then, take your fine flat-nose pliers without teeth with your right hand. These allow you to open the jump ring with a precise movement that you will need to make.

Position your pliers on either side of the opening of your jump ring. With your right hand, you will make a rocking motion towards you to open your jump ring.

Closing a jump ring

To close the jump ring, make the same motion as for opening, but in the opposite direction, to bring the two ends together.

Tip: when rocking to close the jump ring, apply a little pressure to the left with your fine flat-nose pliers to ensure the jump ring is properly closed.
